Introduction
Established in 2010, the CHIJ Katong Convent Concert Band is a young and dynamic band that has distinguished itself in the national school bands scene.
The band achieved remarkable success, securing five consecutive Gold awards at the Singapore International Band Festival from 2012 to 2018. Additionally, the band attained Certificates of Distinction at the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation between 2013-2023 in the full band (2013-2015) and small ensemble (2017-2023) categories.
The band also performed at the Esplanade Concert Hall as part of the Limelight series, and the SOTA concert hall as part of Schools in Concert series, showcasing their growth and commitment to musical excellence.
In 2025, the Concert Band welcomed new conductors, Mr. Er Wee San and Dr. Leslie Wong. Under the dynamic leadership of our new conductors, the band has experienced a renewed sense of purpose and an unwavering commitment to musical excellence. The band continues to uphold its tradition of excellence while embracing new challenges and opportunities under their tutelage.
In the recent Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts presentation 2025, the CHIJ Katong Convent Concert Band made a historic return to the full Band category and was awarded a Certificate of Distinction. This achievement reflects the band's dedication, discipline, and pursuit of musical excellence.
Objectives
1. Foster a Love and Appreciation for Music
To cultivate students' passion for music by introducing them to a wide range of repertoire, encouraging active listening, and providing opportunities for creative expression through structured practices and performances.
2. Develop Cultural Awareness
To expose students to a variety of musical traditions and styles, promoting an understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity and the role of music in the society through key school events.
3. Instill Core Values and Character Development
To instill PIER values such as perseverance, integrity, excellence and respect through regular practice and performance preparation.
Junior Band programme (Sec 1)
Curriculum Focus: Fundamental music theory, basic instrumental techniques and ensemble playing.
Performance Opportunities: Participation in school events and internal recitals to build confidence and stage presence.
Main Band programme (Sec 2-5)
Curriculum Focus: Advanced instrumental techniques, musicianship, basic conducting and leadership opportunities within a section or the band.
Performance Opportunities: Participation in both school and external performances, competitions, master classes, festivals, Values-in-action outreach and exchanges with local and international school bands.
